Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center at One Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport will be jumping with outdoor activity on Saturday, May 30, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, with its annual Bio-Blitz Free-for-All.

The free activities for adults and families will be held all day, rain or shine.

To showcase the expansive variety of wildlife in the lower Merrimack Valley region, the Bio-Blitz Free-for-All features lots of live animals, plants, and insects from local beaches, tide pools, vernal pools, ponds, and backyards.

Joppa Flats naturalists and volunteers will provide helpful information, hands-on learning, and several family-friendly activities, including exploring Joppa’s backyard in search of insects, investigating the “magnification museum,” and handling beach creatures in the center’s 110-gallon touch tank.

The event’s focus is on celebrating nature and taking an in-depth look at its relationships while increasing awareness of the ecology all around us

“Joppa Flats is the perfect place for folks to discover the biodiversity of wildlife along the coast and the Merrimack River.

There are swallowtail butterflies flitting about our backyard gardens, and tree swallows flying around their houses out over our marsh, and minnows in the salt marsh pools,” says Lisa Hutchings, School and Youth Education Coordinator for Joppa Flats.

“This year we hope folks will use their smart phones to download the free ‘iNaturalist’ app to record what they see in nature.

It’s a great way to find folks who can identify insects or beautiful wildflowers, and then everybody shares their results with other nature enthusiasts online!”
