A Boston Family’s Guide to the Epic Universe VIP Tour Experience

Epic Universe VIP Tour Is It Worth It for Families

If you’re thinking about visiting Universal’s brand-new Epic Universe theme park and want to experience it with as little stress (and as many perks) as possible — the Semi-Private VIP Tour is definitely worth considering. We recently took the plunge and did the tour ourselves, and here’s everything Boston families need to know before booking.

VIP tours can be a great fit for certain families—especially those visiting during peak times or looking for a highly guided experience. That said, they’re not the only way to have an excellent Epic Universe day. Some families may find that other options offer more flexibility or better overall value.

If you’re comparing approaches, you may also want to read about our family’s experience visiting Epic Universe with an Express Pass. (https://www.bostoncentral.com/epic-universe-express-pass-family-guide)

📍 Check-In: Easy and Organized

  • Arrival Time: Our email said check-in was at 9:30am (though it originally said 9:00am), so it may vary — double-check ahead of time.

  • How to Get There: We used the hotel shuttle, but valet parking is included in the VIP package if you're driving.

  • Skip the Line: VIP guests enter through a separate security gate — it's located to the far right of the main gates. Bypass the general security lines entirely.

  • Signage & Staff: Everything was clearly marked and well-staffed. Very easy to navigate — they’ve got the process down.

  • Lounge Area: After clearing security, you’re welcomed into a lounge where you check in and receive your VIP lanyard and badge — which also becomes your Express Pass for the rest of the day.

  • No Food or Drink Provided: Heads up — no breakfast or snacks are offered at check-in, so eat ahead of time or swing by the Starbucks right nearby to grab coffee or something quick.

  • Tour Start: Ours officially kicked off around 10am.

🎢 The VIP Tour Experience: What to Expect

The Semi-Private VIP Tour runs about 4 hours (ours wrapped up right around 2pm), and packs in a lot during that time!

  • Group Size: Ours had 12 people plus one knowledgeable (and super friendly) guide.

  • Express Pass: After the tour ends, your VIP badge becomes a one-time Express Pass for eligible rides for the rest of the day.

  • Discounts: Show your VIP badge for 10% off food and merchandise. (We skipped this since we already had a Universal credit card with the same perks.)

  • No Scheduled Lunch: There are water breaks and bathroom stops, but no official food breaks — plan to eat before or after.

  • Walking Distance: Expect to walk about 3.5–4 miles. Wear comfy shoes!

  • Accessibility: The tour is stroller and mobility-scooter friendly. Your guide will help with parking logistics in each land.

  • Rides Included: Although they promise 6 rides, we did 8 total — they try to maximize what you experience, depending on the day’s flow.

  • Front-of-the-Line Access: You skip the regular queues and often enter rides via a back entrance or exit path.

  • Locker Use: For rides requiring lockers, we used them each time — no item-holding by guides on our tour, but the process was quick and smooth.

  • No Behind-the-Scenes Access: The tour stays in public areas only, but you still get some great insider info from your guide.

🎠 Rides We Did on our Tour (In Order):

  1. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge

  2. Mine Cart Madness

  3. Monster’s Unchained

  4. Curse of the Werewolf

  5. Battle at the Ministry

  6. Stardust Racers (Yellow side)

  7. Dragon Racer’s Rally

  8. Hiccup’s Wing Gliders

Bonus tip: The VIP tours often prioritize rides without Express access, like Battle at the Ministry, Mine Cart Madness, and Dragon Racer’s Rally — a huge plus.

🧙‍♂️ Special Extras for Kids & Families

  • Rider Opt-Outs: If someone in your group doesn’t want to ride (or doesn’t meet height requirements), they can wait with the tour guide — even if you’re the only adult. Very helpful for solo parents!

  • Queue Details: Since you skip the main lines, you’ll miss most of the themed queue elements. If that matters to your family, plan to loop back through the regular lines later.

  • Power-Up Bands & Wands: Limited time was given for Nintendo Band activities or wand spells in the Wizarding World — definitely plan to revisit those on your own if your kids love interactive experiences.

  • Tour Guide Tips: Our guide was fantastic, keeping us in shaded or air-conditioned spots when possible, giving ride previews so people could opt out, and answering all our questions. Tips are welcome at the end — we gave $50 cash, and Venmo was also an option.

☀️ What to Bring

  • Water bottle or freestyle cup (you can refill throughout the park)

  • Sunscreen, hat, umbrella, and portable fan — you’ll be in and out of sun

  • Comfortable walking shoes and layered clothing

  • Snacks or small breakfast (nothing provided before the tour)

🎟️ Is the Epic Universe VIP Tour Worth It?

In our opinion — absolutely. Yes, it’s a splurge, but it eliminates stress, saves hours of waiting in line, and gives you a full, fun-packed experience.

If your goal is to experience all the rides and both shows in one day, the VIP tour (plus your Express Pass afterward) makes that totally doable. Want to linger in the lands, meet characters, do interactive games, or just relax and take it all in? You might want to plan for an extra day, like we did.

We actually spent a regular park day beforehand, which let us ride our favorites again, explore the immersive theming, try more food, and shop. That combo — one free-roam day + one VIP day — made for the perfect visit.

Final Thoughts

If you're heading to Universal’s Epic Universe and want a smooth, memorable, and high-impact experience — especially if you're traveling with kids — the VIP Tour is a great option to consider. It saves time, simplifies planning, and leaves plenty of space to enjoy the park at your own pace after.
