Dalí: Disruption and Devotion

July 6–December 1, 2024Dali Exhibit Museum of Fine Arts MFA Boston

Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) is hosting its first-ever exhibition of Salvador Dalí’s work, giving visitors a fresh look at how this bold, unconventional artist was also deeply inspired by European art history.

Known for his surreal and often bizarre imagery, Dalí (1904–1989) had a strong connection to tradition. He didn’t just push boundaries—he studied and admired the old masters from Spain, the Netherlands, and Italy, weaving their influence into his unique style.

Dalí: Disruption and Devotion brings together almost 30 of Dalí’s paintings and prints from the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, along with masterpieces from the MFA’s own collection. Featured works include stunning portraits, religious scenes, and still lifes by iconic artists like El Greco, Orazio Gentileschi, and Velázquez.

In addition to these fascinating pairings, the exhibit also includes some of Dalí’s most famous pieces, such as Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory (1952–54).

Other works show off his signature optical illusions and double images—hallmarks of Surrealism—while his monumental Ecumenical Council (1960) showcases his technical brilliance.

By viewing Dalí’s work alongside these earlier European masters, visitors can get a unique perspective on one of the most groundbreaking artists of the 20th century.
