The Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation school visit program immerses your students in the world of historical innovation, engaging them to think critically, observe processes, and challenge their creative powers of innovation. We want them to “view the past and see the future.”

The museum’s school visit program connects the historical and engineering aspects of the Massachusetts Education Frameworks to a museum tour and innovation activities. Participating in our program helps prepare your students for the Science and Technology/Engineering MCAS exam.

Our school visit program can be geared for students in all grades. Prior to your visit, you will receive a pre-visit packet that will introduce students to the American Industrial Revolution, the history of Waltham, and the museum. The packet will include reading materials and lesson plans for the class as well as an activity that can be done in class or at home.

During your museum visit, your students will tour the galleries, the Charles River to discuss hydropower, and, as an option, meet in the amphitheatre to work on a problem-solving activity of your choice from our Young Inventors Program (extra charge applies). Your students will learn about the history of the Industrial Revolution and its development here in Waltham, how Francis Cabot Lowell used the natural power of the falls to run the factory, and how to connect this innovation to the efforts toward “green” engineering and advancements today.

Please call Ellen Hagney at 781-893-5410 or email [email protected] to arrange your visit and discuss pre-visit strategies.
