Focal Chinese Music specializes in teaching Chinese Language, Music, and Culture through innovative, student-centered methods. We have three locations in Chinatown, Quincy, and Malden, all easily accessible by public transportation.
Chinese (Mandarin) Language Classes
Small classes of 4 to 6 students ensure that your child will receive individual attention and support. Our teachers are native Mandarin speakers with university degrees and specialized training in teaching non-native speakers.
We focus on four areas of Chinese language learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Our teaching materials are based on a combination of textbooks supplemented with a variety of prose, poetry, flashcard games, storytelling, and more developed by our curriculum team. Students will have the option of taking the globally recognized HSK or YCT Chinese Level Exam certification at various levels if considered qualified to participate. Private lessons tailored to the student’s individual needs and classes for adults are also available.
Private Instrument and Vocal Studies
Our private instrument lessons aim to provide students with fundamental skills and techniques in mastering the musical craft of their choice. Students will receive conservatory-style training, focused on developing superior listening ability and music theory understanding. Our lessons are progress-oriented, with ample opportunities to participate in performances and competitions if qualified.
Western instrument options include piano, violin, guitar, flute, cello, viola, saxophone, drums, and more.
Chinese instrument options include guzheng, pipa, yangqin, dizi, Chinese drums, and more.
Vocal studies are taught by professional musicians with university training.
Chinese Cultural Arts
Our Chinese cultural classes aim to provide students with fundamental skills and techniques in mastering a Chinese cultural craft of their choice. Our cultural classes encourage teamwork and are progress-oriented, with ample opportunities for performances and displays.
Classes include Choral and Rhythmic Performance, Ballet and Traditional Chinese Dance Fusion, Chinese Martial Arts (Kungfu and Wushu) and Lion Dance, and Chinese Painting.
English – Writing
Our English writing classes focus on the process of multiple drafts and revisions, giving students the practice they need to develop effective communication skills. Small classes of 4 to 6 students ensure individual attention. Students review grammar concepts, build vocabulary, study sentence structure, and learn strategies for improving their narrative, informational, and persuasive writing.
Mathematics
Students explore a variety of mathematical learning approaches, including Singapore Math and Math Olympiad. Students learn a combination of skills in spatial visualization, data analysis, estimation, measurement, and word problem interpretation.
