April break coincides with Ape Awareness Month, bringing a week of gorilla-themed fun, including bubble-making stations, stories with Big Joe the Storyteller, and daily gorilla themed chats and hands-on activities. It’s also a great opportunity to spotlight the Zoo’s conservation efforts, including initiatives supporting critically endangered gorillas and a unique ‘Gorillas on the Line’ cell phone recycling program that helps protect their habitats!
During APE-ril School Vacation Week at Franklin Park Zoo, guests of all ages will have the opportunity
to learn more about western lowland gorillas, and how they can help protect this
critically endangered species.
Throughout the week, there will be exciting gorillathemed activities, crafts, chats, and more!
On April 21 and 23, the festivities will include hands-on bubble making stations and bubble machines – all adding to the fun. Guests will be entertained by Big Joe the Storyteller on April 21 and 24 from noon – 1:00 p.m., and April 23 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Franklin Park Zoo’s education team will host daily gorilla-themed chats and activities, where guests can learn more about western lowland gorillas.
Each day features a host of activities – please check FranklinParkZoo.org for the daily schedules.
Zoo New England has long been committed to gorilla conservation, devoting resources and expertise to the preservation of this iconic species. Through AZA SAFE, Zoo New England is supporting a project to protect Cross-River gorillas in the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary in Nigeria.
Through the Gorillas on the Line initiative, guests are encouraged to bring their old electronic devices to drop off at the recycling bin located inside the Tropical Forest Pavilion.
When recycled, old cell phones, tablets and chargers can have a major impact on reducing the hunting and displacement of gorillas and other species that share habitats at risk of coltan mining.
Other festivities include opportunities to meet the zookeepers, animal enrichment, hands-on activities, and much more! Talk with exhibitors from local conservation organizations, and learn what you can do to help care for the planet.
