Korean Cultural Society of Boston presents:

Namhi Kim Wagner, A Retrospective, Korean Ceramics

October 3 ~ 17, 2015

Reception: October 3, 3 - 5pm

For the past 40 years Namhi Kim Wagner has enhanced the rich history of Korean ceramics with her passion, creative energy, and bold explorations.

Inspired by many types of slip decoration, she animates her wheel-thrown vessels with bold and expressive slip painting, carving, and stamping.

Among her numerous bodies of work are delicate plates with vibrant stamped patterns, swelling jars encircled with floral carving, and large bowls overflowing with big happy fish and lotuses.

Dynamic tension and harmonic unity characterize the relationships between her refined forms and masterful surface decorations.

In the mid 70's, most American ceramists in the Boston area knew something about Chinese and Japanese ceramics, but they knew nothing about Korean ceramics.

Namhi Kim Wagner changed that.

For the next forty years she was very active and effective as a spokeswoman and as an entertaining teacher of Korean ceramic techniques.

She gave many presentations to a variety of different audiences in major museums and studios in the Boston area.

As an artist-in-residence at the Harvard Ceramics Program, she inspired the large group of students and staff with her expertise, dedication, and passion.

This retrospective exhibition presents a wide range of pottery from Namhi Kim Wagner’s prolific career.
