An enthusiastic traveler, Holmes has photographed on five of the world’s seven continents. He always enjoyed sharing the photos of his travels: “I was the National Geographic photographer for the family.”
With clean composition and luminous color, he directs our eye to the story of the place. Intimate or panoramic, his photos make far-away locations feel immediate, wondrous.
Holmes is a self-taught photographer. He worked with film and slides for five decades. For the past five years, he has worked with digital photography and the possibilities provided by digital photo software. Holmes lives in Andover and has had a studio at Western Avenue Studios for five years.
Life in a decaying New England factory town did not offer Wren much in the line of a traditional arts environment. Instead, Wren explored his world with a cheap Polaroid camera. While stationed in Thailand with the Air Force, Wren gravitated to the base’s hobby shop darkroom. “I had no books, but followed what few instructions I could find taped to the walls.” For years after, Wren traveled, always shipping ahead a mobile photo lab.
Wren’s images reflect his “gear head” interests. His photos bristle with the metallic beauty of cars and aircraft. He says his photos often contain a story, but “it is up to you to find your own story within the image.”
Wren worked for Eastman Kodak for 20 years. Wren moved to Chelmsford twenty years ago. He currently works as a new media designer and technology instructor at UMass-Lowell, and is a member of Western Avenue Studios.
Conceptual Contrasts shows in the Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, second floor of the A-Mill, from October 26 through November 27, 2011. A reception will be held Friday, November 4, 6:00-9:00 pm. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11:00am to 4:30pm. Take 495 to the Lowell Connector to the Thorndike St exit. Merge onto Thorndike St. After the third set of lights take the ramp on the right. At the second set of lights at the top of the ramp, turn left onto Middlesex St. Middlesex Street bears to the right just after the Boys and Girls Club, follow to first set of lights which is School Street. Turn right on School, at the crest of the hill turn right onto Western Avenue. Western Avenue Studios is the five story red brick building on the right and the 3 story building on the left (the buildings form an 'L') at the end of Western Ave.
