We would like to invite our friends and neighbors to the annual “Janmashtami” celebration on Friday Aug 15th from 6:00-9:30 pm at YMCA Malden MA.
Janmashtami commemorates the earthly appearance of Krishna, who is described in India’s sacred writings as God Himself.
One of the biggest religious festivals in the world, it is celebrated by nine hundred and thirty million people around the world--and two million in the US alone.
To devotees, it’s Christmas and New Year’s in one, a day of deep spiritual renewal and celebration that effectively finishes an old year and begins a fresh one.
Sri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the month of Shraavan.
Krishna, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared in Mathura as son of Vasudeva and Devaki.
In Bhagavad Gita 4.9 text Lord Krishna says:
janma karma ca me divyam
evam´ yo vetti tattvatah?
tyaktva deham´ punar janma
naiti mam eti so 'rjuna
One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.
Lord Krishna Himself in Bhagavad gita, Chapter 4 text 8 describes the reason of His appearance as follows:
paritranay sadhunam
vinsaya ca duskrtam
darma-samsthapanrthaya
sambhavami yuge yuge
(To deliver the pious and annihilate the miscreants, also to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear millennium after millennium).
