//A BRIEF HISTORY OF TINIKLING//

According to oral history, there are two origin stories for the national dance of the Philippines, Tinikling.

In one story, it's said to have originated in pre-Spanish Leyte, an island of Visaya, and is meant to invoke the grace and speed of the tinikling bird moving through the marshes.

The other is darker: it's thought that the dance was born out of a punishment endured by the natives enslaved by the Spaniards in the 16th century.

Those who worked too slowly in the rice fields were made to stand between two thorny bamboo poles to have their feet beaten when the poles were clapped together.

By jumping, the natives could escape punishment.

The dance is suitable for beginners and is danced to a 3/4 or waltz beat that is made by hand claps, stomps and the sound of the bamboo poles.

// ABOUT THE ARTIST //

Ellie Tiglao is the Programs Director at EMW and a culinary extraordinaire.

Hailing from the West Coast, she is striving to bring Filipino cuisine to Boston through her Pamangan!

pop-up dinner series.

Each month she shares gourmet Filipino dishes inspired by family cooking and her own flair with Bostonians sorely in need of real Filipino food.

For this workshop, we are fortunate to have her share her Filipino heritage with us through dance, an art she mastered with her college Tinikling team.
