Los Angeles-based multimedia artist Sam Durant, independent curator Pedro Alonzo, and Haley House’s Nina LaNegra and Fulani Haynes, hosted by The Trustees as part of the
organization’s new Art and the Landscape Initiative designed to bring curated outdoor installations by renowned artists to some of its most iconic properties and create new, inspirational experiences for visitors.

Lyceum I: The Picnic: Food on the table
brings families and communities together.

This event, in partnership with Haley House, addresses food culture as a means to start a willing dialogue of healing.

As the participants eat from a menu of traditional African American dishes, speakers will share the history of the food, the ingredients, and the recipes.

Participants are invited to bring and share their own food stories and recipes.

The Picnic is the first of
four core events, called ‘lyceums’ in the spirit of 19th century
gatherings, that The Trustees’ have planned to engage the public in the The Meeting House installation on view
at the Old Manse through October.

Event is free, open to the public, and suitable for all ages.

The Meeting House: The structure, based on the houses of the first
emancipated African men and women in Concord, features an open, transparent pavilion that is designed to function as a platform for the public to share and
explore history, artwork, and issues of race, while reactivating The Old Manse as a setting for critical discussions.

The installation is complimented by an exhibition inside the Manse featuring replicated, post-colonial African artifacts and a reinterpretation of existing pieces through the lens of the enslaved people who may have impacted them.

Please pre-register online at thetrustees.org/art.

Free bus transportation departing from Haley House in Roxbury is available.

Seats are limited, please register online or contact Ena Fox at [email protected] for more information.

The Concord Commuter Rail Station at 90 Thoreau Street is a 1.2 mile walk from the Old Manse.
