“Mirrors of the Soul: Textiles and Identity in Frida Kahlo” is a lecture by Marta Turok, one of the Mexico’s leading experts on traditional textiles.

Trained as an anthropologist, Turok is a writer, curator, and activist specializing in Mexican folk art and socio-economic development.

When the private spaces of Frida Kahlo’s home, la Casa Azul (the Blue House, now the Frida Kahlo Museum) were opened in 2004 for the first time since her death, Turok was invited to examine Kahlo’s clothing and to describe the histories behind her now-iconic dresses and accessories.

This talk will draw from Turok’s research on Kahlo’s collection of textiles, as well as her extensive knowledge of Mexican traditions of weaving, embroidery, and participation in the global market for clothing.
