Whale Stranding features works by Massachusetts artist Daniel Ranalli that visually interpret historical whale strandings and “drivings.” The artist has been fascinated by the subject since he observed a stranding firsthand in 1991 at Wellfleet.

Along with an exploration of the larger context around the environmental impact of strandings, curators also set Ranalli’s art in conversation with items from the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s historic collections, including photographs and stereoviews of whale strandings, illustrated logbooks from whaling voyages, and original whale stamps used on those voyages.

On view from May 25, 2023 - November 5, 2023 in the museum’s Upper Level Gallery
