Join us this April as we will present “Gertrude Cawein at Hammond Castle Museum,” a new exhibit of nearly 60 works of art by Eric Pape, (1870 – 1938) the distinguished Golden Age artist and illustrator.

This exhibit offers a unique insight into the multifaceted talents of Pape.

Renowned as a painter, designer of the iconic “Tablet Rock Memorial” in Stage Fort Park, and a society portraitist, Pape’s brilliance shines through various mediums, including pencil, pen, watercolors, and oils.

At the heart of this celebration is the full-length portrait of Gertrude Cawein, painted by Pape and loaned from the Filson Historical Society in Louisville, Kentucky.

For the first time outside the Filson, visitors can witness this rare example of Pape’s work as a society portraitist.

The majority of the works will be on loan from the private collection of esteemed Pape collector and biographer, Dr. Gregory Conn.

The exhibition not only showcases Gertrude's portrait but also highlights the intricate world of Eric Pape's artistry, offering a unique glimpse into Pape's role as a portraitist and will include examples of his celebrity portraits created during the Great Depression.

A limited selection of artworks from the Hammond Castle Museum’s previous 2023 Pape At Hammond Castle Museum exhibit will be on display.

The three Pape paintings which are on permanent display within the Museum, which include the sole surviving mural of the celebrated artist, 'The Wireless Naval Battle of Gloucester Bay,' will also be featured.

The Museum Shop will also offer a limited number of copies of Dr. Conn's newest biography, 'Eric Pape in the New York Herald Tribune,' which delves into Pape's work as a society portraitist.

LOCATION↑ top

80 Hesperus Avenue, Gloucester, MA, 01930 map
Phone: 9782832080

Take I-95 North out of Boston to Exit 45, then Route 128 North to Exit 14. Turn right onto Route 133 to the very end of that highway, and with the ocean directly in front of you turn right onto Route 127. Approximately 3/4 of a mile from that intersection the road will begin to narrow. Look for a blue and white sign on your left for the castle, and turn onto Hesperus Avenue. The Museum is just a few blocks down Hesperus Avenue on your left. Park in the lot off the street, and take the walkway and stairs down to the entrance.

TIPS↑ top

  • While the Hammond Castle Museum, a historic landmark built in the late 1920s, is not handicapped accessible for assistive devices such as wheelchairs and walkers due to the number of stairs, it does allow service dogs on premises. This Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places for over 50 years, presents challenges for visitors with mobility impairments, as it features numerous stairs. Accessing the Lobby and Museum Shop from the parking lot requires descending approximately 30 exterior stone stairs, with only a portion having a railing. Further, navigating through all galleries involves over 160 total steps across more than six levels, and most galleries do not have visitor seating.
