The project, produced by photographer Darlene DeVita and writer Sarah Putnam, features images and stories, both personal and historical, from the Chelsea population.
With grant support, they have added new photos and videos of members of the Chelsea black community.
The photos show us how the apocalyptic Chelsea Fire of 1973 displaced many people in this community.
They had an especially difficult time finding new homes in Chelsea, where they had lived for generations.
History of the Project:
DeVita started the project in 2016.
It was born from a deep love of the city, its rich culture, vibrant beauty, and resilient community.
Just across the harbor from Boston, yet culturally distinct, Chelsea is often overlooked.
During the trauma of COVID-19, Chelsea was particularly hard-hit, and the project was a departure from the disaster-oriented media narratives being broadcast on the media.
Each show became a source of civic pride as we highlighted a community that is resilient, creative, courageous, and just.
This project features and celebrates its residents - from activists to entrepreneurs, city officials to students, and old-timers to newcomers.
It is an homage to those who make the city work every day.
The project has reached new audiences in and beyond Chelsea.
That momentum continues to grow as it evolves.
Come join us July 1st!
Light refreshments provided.
