Apply now for Kingdom County Productions' 'Semester Cinema,' a fully accredited semester–long independent filmmaking and experiential learning, study away program that immerses students in every aspect of producing an ambitious feature film - and feature documentary - for national release.Students will work in substantial roles on the film’s physical production.
The deadline to apply is October 15.
Students will be based on the campus of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts where they will spend seven weeks participating in classes, workshops, and guest lectures; they will also examine the script, explore cultural contexts, and work to discover and articulate the film’s artistic possibilities.
The forty-five or so film and theater students will be mentored by some thirty film professionals.
Students not only receive an IMDb credit, but they will also develop added confidence and enhanced skills in critical thinking, problem solving, flexibility, and collaboration.
The program also includes an expanded documentary planning and production project.
Director, producer, and screenwriter Jay Craven conceived of Semester Cinema in 2005, when he was a professor at Marlboro College and simultaneously working on Disappearances, his fifth feature film starring Kris Kristofferson.
He has found critical success in the film industry and has now expanded his productions to fully embrace education philosopher John Dewey’s call for “[…] intensive learning that enlarges meaning through shared experience and joint action.”
Past Semester Cinema projects have featured actors including Bruce Dern, Jacqueline Bissett, Jessica Hecht, Genevieve Bujold, Gordon Clapp – and Kristofferson.
Dozens of emerging filmmakers also got their start as students under Craven’s mentorship, such as Benh Zeitlin, whose debut film, Beasts of the Southern Wild, received four Oscar nominations, and Tyler Davidson, producer of Emily the Criminal and Cannes award-winner, Take Shelter.
