JOIN THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION!

Did you know the Sudbury, Assabet and Concord Rivers, flowing just outside of Greater Boston, were protected by the US Congress as outstanding resources?

Do you want to paddle, hike, or explore new places close to home that make you feel like you’re travelling back in time?

Two days of celebration on and around the Concord, Assabet, and Sudbury rivers. Many Metrowest towns will be participating with fun family events.

In 1968, Congress passed the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, to protect free-flowing rivers that had not yet been dammed for industrial use. Less than 1% of rivers in the US are protected under the Act. The Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord were protected in 1999 in recognition of their outstanding beauty, ecology, recreation opportunities, and their place in American history and literature.

Riverfest is our free annual celebration of your Wild and Scenic River. All events are led by partners, and there is something for everyone in towns near you, from Framingham north to Lowell. This year our 'centers of activity' will once again be:

On Saturday June 22nd - visit Great Meadows Wildlife Refuge inSudbury for family fishing, arts and crafts, hotdogs available through Friends of the Assabet, and other fun activities.

On Sunday June 23rd - visit the Old Manse in Concord for a full day of kids activities, tours, music, the now-famous Family Cardboard Boat Race, and the 17th annual solstice concert and picnic in the evening.

Enjoy free hikes, paddles, walks, demonstrations, music, and family fun all weekend in this annual celebration of the federally-designated Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord Wild and Scenic Rivers. Explore all the rivers have to offer, just west of Boston!

Assabet Valley River History:
Congress designated the Sudbury, Assabet and Concord Rivers as National Wild and Scenic Rivers in 1999. The product of many years of hard work by advocates throughout the watershed, this designation recognizes the unique character of these rivers and provides for their added protection.

The River Stewardship Council (RSC), comprising local, state and federal representatives as well as two regional conservation organizations, was established to coordinate conservation of the 29 miles designated as Wild and Scenic. Together with the National Park Service, the RSC evaluates federal permits and facilitates efforts to preserve and improve river resources.

To celebrate these rivers and highlight their importance in our communities, the RSC is pleased to present this 15th annual RiverFest.
