Though busking was first practiced in medieval Europe, the American busking tradition can be traced to the many traveling circuses that once criss-crossed the nation. In their 'off-hours,' circus performers would supplement their meager wages by entertaining the townsfolk in public squares and plazas, juggling, clowning, and sword-swallowing for tips. Buskers are now deeply rooted in our urban culture...from the street corner to the subway platform, buskers continue to delight and amuse townsfolk the world over.
The Newburyport Buskers Festival is one of many of its kind throughout the world. Other great festivals include American BuskerFests in Denver and Chicago, several across Canada, and international festivals in Italy, Singapore and New Zealand.

Lovely Village Beautiful Day Ummm Where Are The Buskers
We had a lovely time strolling our 5-month old 'round Newburyport on a gorgeous September day. Lots of folks milling about made it seem a special occasion. However, while there were no fewer than 8-10 food stalls, we only came across three performers. An excellent banjoist, the Yo-Yo people (not their correct stage names, I'm sure), and an off-duty pirate. Perhaps we didn't navigate well, but the selection seemed slim.Newburyport Buskers Festival
This was so much fun! We went on a warm - but not hot - sunny day and had a great time. My 2.5 year old and 8 month old loved it! Not only were the street performers wonderful, there was also a balloon artist, a playground, lots of food, boats in the harbor to watch, and boutique shopping. Definitely something for everyone and very family friendly. Parking was not an issue, and the streets were easy to navigate with strollers. I would highly recommend this event!RELATED LINKS | ↑ top |
