Lights, Camera, Action! (Grades 5-8) This course will introduce young students to the basics of filmmaking from conceiving, planning and writing an idea to shooting, editing and presenting the final piece on DVD.

Using small digital video cameras and digital editing software, students will work individually and in groups sharing tasks on the components of the finished videos.

Student ideas and talents will be incorporated and guided by the instructor so as to enable optimum hands-on experience and immersion for everyone.

Dance Explosion (Grades 3-5) The students will learn a hip-hop warm up focusing on how to properly stretch their bodies as well as how to isolate and condition their muscles. They will go across the floor in pairs using different traveling movements. At the end of each class they will learn a piece of choreography that will be built through the week. The students will also get the opportunity to work individually on choreography themselves and in small groups where they will create a small dance together. At the end of the week they will show a sample of the dance class including the piece of choreography they learned and small group choreography they created.

Creative Movement (Grades K-2) Creative Movement children will explore movement through music, develop physical skills, stimulate imagination and promote creativity. Creative movement uses body actions to: communicate an image (the wind), communicate an idea (a journey) or communicate a feeling (strength). We will use all different types of music from Disney's Lion King to James Brown.

Puppetry (Grades K-2 and 3-5) Mike Romanyshyn and Susie Dennison will be at SummerTime again this year to offer a puppet making, painting, storytelling, music and creative movement experience. Puppets of all kids, flags, paper movies, toy theaters, picture stories, theater games and playing in a wild band will be part of the fun. Be ready to surprise everyone with your amazing puppets, fantastic stories, and ear splitting horn sounds.

Lego Engineering (Grades K-2) - Pre-Engineering Create, play and learn. Build a town, city, or star base with houses, buildings, pyramids, bridges, tunnels, towers, and more. Build motorized cars, trains, buses, and trucks; race them; crash them; repair them. Explore the many possibilities of LEGO building systems while learning useful construction techniques.
The goals of the class are to:
Develop and enhance students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills
Expose children to concepts and vocabulary of Engineering, Architecture, and Physics
Provide an opportunity to have a great time with a terrific building toy
Lego Engineering (Grades 3-5) - Engineering Fundamentals Students take on real-life engineering challenges that explore concepts in physics, architecture, mechanical, and structural engineering with over 100,000 pieces of LEGO material. From racers to Battletracks, this is a hands-on and minds-on adventure suitable for LEGO novices to “experts.” Designed by engineers, the curriculum challenges both new and returning students to reach the next level of engineering comprehension while having fun.
The goals of the class are to:

Design Your Own Gear (Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5)The Patriots may not have won the Super Bowl, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t have their championship jersey! This class will offer a hands-on introduction to fabric construction in a fun environment. Students in grades K-5 will learn all the basic steps including sketching, pattern making, cutting, and sewing to make a skirt, sports team gear, backpack, or other accessory. Projects will be challenging but age appropriate. Students will learn different hand sewing techniques to create their pieces. In addition students will be introduced to the use of the sewing machine, serger, and iron in a fun and safe environment.

Circus Arts (Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5)Come learn to juggle! This class will have you balancing feathers on your chin, spinning plates on your fingers, and tossing all sorts of things up into the air. (Maybe we'll even catch them!) Taught by a professional Boston Circus Guild performer, you're guaranteed to learn skills that will let you be your own personal one-kid circus!

Visual Art (Grades 3-5) - 'PopArt Ceramic Food Picnic' Large or small, wildly colored plates of food or individual pieces, i.e. cupcakes, pizzas, etc., kids will love creating their own culinary favorites and sculpting their own menus. We'll use self drying clay, acrylic paints that will be sprayed with a gloss coating for shine. The session will end with an outdoor 'picnic' which would include some real food amongst our sculpted objects!

Visual Art (Grades K-2) - “Suns, Butterflies and Bugs Pillow/Quilt” By using what we can find in nature, on videos and in books, we’ll study different insects, the life cycle of butterflies, and bugs to use as inspiration for our art. From there we can draw individual designs of insects/butterflies and suns and incorporate those designs on squares of fabric copy with fabric paint (making extra pieces that will be turned into a quilt). Stuffing and sewing the pillow sections together comes next, edging the pieces with yarned stitching and tassels to make it complete!

Pump Up the Jamz: SummerTime Music Video (Grades 5-8) You know you want to rock out - and now you can! You will choose your instrument, join a rock band, participate in daily rehearsals, make band promo materials, and record clips for a stop-motion music video. Along the way you will learn about musicality, song arranging, teamwork, and video production techniques. At the end of the week, you will give a live performance and share your music video! Pump Up the Jamz is open to absolute beginners, experienced rockers, and all levels in between.

Daytripping in Beantown (Grades 5-8) For families with older kids, don't forget our 'daytripping' option for SummerTime's final week, June 25-June 29. At SummerTime 2012 those entering grades 5-8 can stroll along Revere Beach with an ice cream cone, build kites and fly them in Brookline’s Larz Anderson Park, uncover the location of the underground Axiom Art Gallery, and scream their lungs out on one Six Flags New England’s roller coasters. With two chaperones leading the way, the daytripping model is designed for kids to discover Boston in new and safe ways.
