Founded in 1992, Canstruction’s mission is to highlight the issue of hunger and food insecurity across communities, collect food for distribution to thousands, and to showcase the creativity of the design industry.
Canstruction Boston, an annual charity event that combines design, creativity, and social responsibility, has become a beloved tradition in the A/E/C industry since its inception in 1995.
The event centers around the construction of impressive sculptures made entirely from canned food, which are then displayed and later donated to local food banks.
The structures are built by teams of architects, engineers, designers, and students, showcasing their skills in service of a truly worthy cause. All proceeds from the event, and the canned goods themselves, have benefited the Merrimack Valley Food Bank since 2011.
This year’s theme is Icons!
For 2024, Canstruction Boston has selected Icons as its competition theme. Iconic buildings, people, brands, media, and more—teams are invited to build the icons that imagination inspires.
Structures will stay up for three weeks, raising awareness about hunger as the structures inspire and entertain the public.
The event not only raises awareness about hunger and food insecurity, but also fosters a sense of community engagement as participants collaborate to craft remarkable works of architecture, engineering, and construction from an everyday item.
Over the past three decades, Canstruction Boston has been a showcase of talent, dedication, and compassion, tapping into the power of creative collaboration for a meaningful cause.
In 2023, SMPS Boston will take the reins as the organizer of Canstruction Boston for the first time. There’s a strong alignment between the values of Canstruction and the goals of SMPS Boston and its membership.
As an event that merges the worlds of design, architecture, and social responsibility, Canstruction Boston has garnered attention and accolades over the years.
