The artists of at the Loading Dock Gallery celebrate Summer in the City during the months of July and August.

The exhibit ranges from paintings to fiber, sculpture to jewelry, and mixed media to ceramics. With color, texture, and imagination, the artists invite visitors to celebrate the Summer in the City.

Samantha Tucker transforms “summer mud” into earthy vessels and tableware. Nita Leger Casey uses pastel and paint to contemplate boats on a river. Jean Theurkauf weaves hand-dyed yarns into gossamer shawls.

Sonja Lee-Austin incorporates her photographs into quilt art inspired by the Boston Public Garden. To her, summer means “cool trees, flowers, and swan boats.” She treasure the chance to “escape from the air conditioning of work and actually experience the beautiful summer weather…watching the kids, tourists, the swan boats, and the ducks.”

For sculptor and painter Glen Szegedy, summer means cool colors: “ceramics in Strawberry Ice, Mint Sherbet, Lemonade, and many more.” “Summer can be so peaceful,” he observes. “Sometimes I stop just to relish the slowness of the day.”

Arlette Laan is thinking of a line dolls made from flamingo- and sandal-patterned socks. Painter Paula Mingolelli promises “some lazy hazy crazy stuff.” Photographer Anna Harrison escapes to the beach. Linda Dunn paints in the shade.

Raised in New Hampshire, Michal Truelsen treasures “every leaf and flower and fruit” in the city. “Walking down the hill, across the river, to Boarding House Park for a concert, I'm smelling new-cut grass and looking at every little glowing patch of green in the glancing light of early evening.” For Maxine Farkas, “the colors always seem more vivid.” She looks forward to “lazy days, fireworks on the fourth of July, tree canopies providing respite from the sun [and] concerts at Boarding House Park,” images which resonate in her art.

Located at Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, The Loading Dock Gallery represents more than 40 members of the Western Avenue Studios Artist Association. A member-run cooperative, the Gallery carries member’s artwork as well as clothing, glass, ceramics and reproductions.

Summer in the City shows in the Loading Dock Gallery, on the second floor of the A-Mill, from June 27 through August 26, 2012.
