Over 35 dance students, age 8 to 20, are donating their time and talents to choreograph and perform in a collaborative dance showcase to raise money for cancer research.

The dancers are from different studios in Acton and Sudbury, but have come together to create a program that will entertain while raising money for the IBC Network Foundation (www.theibcnetwork.org).

Two shows will be held, on June 11th and June 12th at 7:30 pm, with fifteen original, student choreographed pieces included.

The studios involved are Acton-Boxborough Dance Center in Acton, led by Eden Roessel, and The Performing Arts Connection in Sudbury, run by Samantha Bower.

These two women met over four years ago when Eden began teaching at The Performing Arts Connection, and while she has since gone on to become the director of ABDC, owned by the Samperi family, the two have maintained their friendship.

Each studio has strong roots in community service, so working together on this particular program was a natural fit.

Samantha Bower, Director of The Performing Arts Connection in Sudbury, had the idea when she learned of a friend’s struggle with IBC (inflammatory breast cancer).

“Her diagnosis was late-stage, and she began to blog about it, even through the most dire times,” Bower said.

“Her strength, faith and the vulnerability she showed as a young mother during an incredibly scary time was inspiring.

I am currently pregnant with my second son as well, so my heart just completely went out to her and her children.

I knew I had to take action, and this was one way I knew how to help.

I wanted to include my students and staff, and I wanted to make this bigger than just TPAC, so I called my good friend, Eden and told her about the project.

She was on board immediately and felt a connection to the story.

I was excited to have an opportunity not only to make this a big event, but to model positive, collaborative business relationships to our students and the community.”

“Breast Cancer Awareness and Research is really important to ABDC”, Roessel added.

“Our studio was founded in 1994 by Melinda Samperi, who was a huge part of the Acton-Boxborough Community.

She was my teacher and inspiration - I came to ABDC in 1998 as a student - and she passed away in 2007 after a 3-year battle with breast cancer.

The year after she died, I participated in the Avon Walk with 2 other ABDC alums with a lot of donations and support from studio families.

There is also a scholarship in her name, which is given to a high school senior that shares Melinda's passion for dance, theater, and community involvement, and we raise money for that through concession stands at our shows.

This past October, we raised over $800 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation during a week long bake sale-many of our students/teachers volunteered to supply the baked goods, and we also sold pink hair bows and pink ribbon pins.”

Providing a leadership role to their students was also important to both studios.

“This was a unique performance opportunity for our dancers,” Bower said, “as every dance is being choreographed by another student.

Watching them teach and learn in this environment is inspiring.” Roessel said, “I think it's wonderful that our two studios can work collaboratively on this project.

As dancers, we speak a language that is universal no matter what studio you go to, and I think it's great that we can teach our students that they can use this language to accomplish so much!”

Choreo for A Cure will have two performances: the first is Thursday, June 11th at The Performing Arts Connection in Sudbury, and the second on Friday, June 12th at RJ Grey Junior High School in Acton, MA.

Each performance begins at 7:30 pm, with all proceeds being donated to the IBC Network Foundation.

Tickets are $15 in advance (available to purchase online at http://www.ticketstage.com/T/TPAC) or $18 at the door.

About Acton-Boxborough Dance Center, Acton MA: In 1994 Melinda C.

Samperi opened Acton-Boxborough Dance Center to create a place for children to learn to share her love of dance while gaining confidence and lasting friendships.

She believed that everyone had a place for dance in their lives, and strived to create an environment that nurtured dancers of any age and ability level.

Dance brought her such joy to her life, and she wanted to share that with the community.
