On Thursday December 3 at 6 pm, the Roxbury Community College Foundation (RCCF) will honor the achievements of Sarah-Ann Shaw, Carmen Fields, and Rev. Liz Walker at their virtual fundraising event, Legends of Roxbury: A Celebration of Black Women in Broadcast Media.

Money raised from the event will support Roxbury Community College students through scholarships, student services and program improvements.

Sarah-Ann Shaw was the first female African American television reporter at WBZ-TV in Boston.

Carmen Fields won a Pulitzer prize as part of the Boston Globe team for coverage of school desegregation in Boston.

Rev.

Liz Walker was the first black woman to co-anchor a newscast in Boston at WBZ-TV.

The event will be hosted by Tashanea Whitlow, an alumnus of RCC and anchor at the Black News Channel.

Throughout their careers, Sarah-Ann Shaw, Carmen Fields, and Rev.

Liz Walker sought to amplify the voices of traditionally underserved populations, like RCC students.

Over 80% of RCC’s students identify as people of color, 80% need financial assistance, and many are immigrants, single parents, and/or first-generation college students.

RCC is dedicated to serving over 3,000 students each year who seek to improve their lives through education.

People can attend this event through RCC’s Facebook Live and YouTube channels.

There will be opportunities to donate throughout the program.
