The Thoreau Society Annual Gathering will be held July 12-15.

You can register in person at the Masonic Temple on Wednesday, July 11, 5-7 pm and throughout the conference.

A schedule of events is available at thoreausociety.org.

This year’s theme is “Thoreau's Ecological and Cultural Vision for a Tolerable Future.” The idea for the conference came from a letter Thoreau wrote to his friend, H.G.O.

Blake in Worcester, MA.

Composed May 20, 1860, Thoreau asks his friend, “What is the use of a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on?” Thoreau Society members and presenters will examine the cultural and ecological changes of our times and how through efforts within the community we might work toward building a sustainable future.

The Dana S.

Brigham Memorial Keynote Address will be given by Aaron Sachs on Saturday, July 14 at 10:45 am at First Parish, Concord.

Professor Sachs is the founder and coordinator of the Cornell Roundtable on Environmental Studies at Cornell University.

Following lunch, PEN New England will be presenting its Henry David Thoreau Award to Bernd Heinrich, a distinguished scientist in the field of comparative

physiology and behavior of insects.

He is an avid marathon runner and has written about “Why We Run: A Natural History.” A Guggenheim, Harvard, and Von Humboldt Fellow, Heinrich is a respected naturalist in the tradition of Thoreau.

Friday night at 7:30 pm at First Parish, the Society will feature a popular, local jug band, Outrageous Fortune.
