Saint Matthew's in Acton is hosting a free Saturday morning breakfast beginning at 8:30 AM, October 19th, with Dr. Belinda Forbes, a long term Methodist missionary dentist who has been living her faith in Nicaragua for almost 30 years.
She will begin her presentation at 9:00 AM.
Nicaragua is a country which has and is presently going through much turmoil.
Many immigrants who come to the USA at our southern border come from Central American countries like Nicaragua.
Dr. Belinda Forbes serves in Managua, Nicaragua with Acción Médica Cristiana (Christian Medical Action or AMC), a Nicaraguan Christian ecumenical organization specializing in community health and development in impoverished rural communities.
Dr. Forbes uses her dental education and skills to serve the people of Nicaragua.
Of her assignment, Dr. Forbes says, “AMC’s model for local empowerment allows my contribution to be long-lasting and sustainable.
AMC is committed to health education and promotion, farming and nutrition, disaster prevention, HIV/AIDS prevention, clean water and sanitation, women’s health, and youth leadership.
AMC’s successes are based on community participation and the values of faith and justice.”
Dr. Forbes’s call to follow where her faith leads began in her early teens.
After years of studying both Spanish and dentistry, she went to Nicaragua to serve as a missionary for one year.
Nearly 30 years later she continues to work with dentists and other health care professionals with Accion Medica Cristiana.
Listen as Dr. Forbes shares some of what she has learned about short-term and long-term mission work, learning to listen more deeply, and how sometimes we are called to do things that are very different from what we had planned or expected.
