Led by a museum docent, visitors can take in a variety of exhibits and learn the often-overlooked stories of the women who contributed to New Bedford's history.
Some stories highlighted on the tour include:
-Intrepid women like Marian Shaw Smith and Elizabeth Marble who accompanied their captain husbands on whaling voyages around the world.
-The contributions of Black women like Polly Johnson and Amelia Piper to New Bedford’s Underground Railroad.
-How the labor movement provided unique leadership opportunities for local factory workers such as Dora Bastarache and Eulalia Mendes
-How women like Mary T. Vermette and Emily Howland Bourne were instrumental in preserving local history and creating the exhibits that we now enjoy.
The tour features more than a dozen women profiled on Lighting the Way: Historic Women of SouthCoast
Launched in 2018, the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s project Lighting the Way: Historic Women of SouthCoast unearths hidden histories of remarkable women from the SouthCoast of Massachusetts who have made an extraordinary impact on their community and beyond.
