In an 18th century American family, men were responsible for its support through their work; farming, fishing, trading or skilled labor.

Women also had their assigned place and role in the household determined for the “fair sex” by custom and laws.

But questions arise. Circumstances change. Children are born. Deaths occur.

A father, brother or husband might not be available when a woman must make decisions.
