A talk by Lo Dagerman about Swedish writer Stig Dagerman (1923-1954), and the project to re-introduce her father’s writing to an American readership.

Stig Dagerman became a household name in Sweden shortly after WWII and produced a staggering amount of literature in his short career, with his works compared to fellow literary giants Franz Kafka, William Faulkner and Albert Camus.

He was one of a group of Swedish writers who channeled existentialist feelings of fear, alienation and meaninglessness common in the wake of the horrors of WWII and the looming Cold War.

In spite of the themes of his writings, he managed to promote empathy and understanding, and today a prize is given annually in Sweden to an author who does the same.

His works are translated into many languages and continues to inspire readers, writers, musicians and filmmakers.
