A unique public education program in which presentations consist of two trained speakers sharing their compelling personal stories of living with mental health challenges and achieving recovery.

Howard D. Trachtman, BS, CPS, CPRP and Megan Wiechnik will be doing an In Our Own Voice presentation on Sunday, June 14th at 2pm at Temple Beth Israel, 25 Harvard Street, Waltham.

In Our Own Voice is a program of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, www.nami.org and www.namimiass.org.

Both presenters tell their personal recovery story from mental illness through 5 stages of recovery: dark days, acceptance, treatment, coping skills and successes, hopes & dreams.

Segments of people with different diagnoses and cultural backgrounds will also be shown through a DVD.

The purpose of the program is to fight stigma and discrimination of people with mental illness and educate the public that people can recovery from mental illness and lead productive lives as well as useful resources..

Mr. Trachtman has been a long-term member of Temple Beth Israel and had previously done an In Our Own Voice at Temple Beth Israel.
He is the co-founder of the Metro Boston Recovery Learning Community www.mbrlc.org and the NAMI Greater Boston Consumer Advocacy Network www.namigbcan.org.

He developed psychiatric symptoms while at MIT and later graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Business Administration/Management Information Systems.

He enjoys theater, concerts, reading and eating out.

Megan Wiechnik graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Philosophy & Psychology and an eagerness to make positive social change.

Megan manages a mental health resource helpline at NAMI Massachusetts: the NAMI Mass Compass.

Megan also shares her story of hope and recovery as an In Our Own Voice presenter.

In her free time, Megan enjoys tutoring ESL, cooking, art, music and the great outdoors.

Megan and Howard will both be taking questions from attendees and talking more about resources for both people with mental illness and their family and friends.
