Dr. Charlie Innis saved 700+ turtles after the Phiilipine authorities confiscated them and put them in barrels. He will share his story of the experience and what he learned.

Last June, Philippine authorities confiscated more than 4,000 endangered Palawan forest turtles, fearing that much of the entire species had been illegally caught by poachers.

When found, hundreds of turtles were dehydrated and had been stacked on top of each other in barrels for weeks.

As one of the first responders, Dr. Charlie Innis, the New England Aquarium’s head veterinarian, helped other volunteers and conservation groups with the turtles’ medical care and treatment before releasing them back into the forests and muddy streams in the Philippines.

He will discuss his experience along with the related issues of global illegal wildlife trade, deforestation, variable legal enforcement, range country socioeconomics, and politics.

The lecture will be held at New England Aquarium's Simons IMAX Theater on October 29th at 7 p.m., and is FREE.

The Aquarium hosts a series of informative free lectures, films, and discussions for the community this fall.

The Lowell Institute supports the lectures.

Most are available on the Aquarium’s YouTube channel afterward.

Pre-registration is encouraged on the Aquarium’s website, to www.neaq.org/aquariumlectures or call 617-973-6595 for more information.
