In this lecture, “A Stroll through the New Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument,” Drs.
Peter Auster and Scott Kraus will discuss and illustrate with underwater images their many years of research using ships, aircraft, and deep-sea underwater submersibles to document marine mammals and deep-sea ecology in this area beyond the continental shelf.
WHO: Dr. Peter Auster is a Senior Research Scientist at Mystic Aquarium and Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Connecticut.
He is a marine ecologist and his work is focused broadly on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in the ocean.
He has served as a scientist or chief-scientist on over 60 major research cruises and led many shore-based projects in the northwest Atlantic, Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, Caribbean Sea, Indian Ocean, South China Sea, Gulf of California, and in the equatorial Pacific, using the same types of techniques underwater that wildlife biologists use on land.
Dr. Scott Kraus has over 40 years of field research and has been a whale scientist at the Aquarium since 1980.
He is now Vice President and Senior Adviser at the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium.
He has published over 110 papers on marine mammals, bluefin tuna, fisheries, and bycatch.
He was a member of the original U.S.
National Right Whale Recovery Team and currently serves as a member on the U.S.
Large Whale Take Reduction Team.
His recent studies have involved identifying and testing methods for reducing the impacts of human activities on cetaceans and the marine environment.
