WHAT: Seals dive deep into the ocean to hunt while holding their breath.

In this lecture, ”Diving Deep: How Do Seals Protect Their Hearts and Brains Without Oxygen,” scientists Dr. Allyson Hindle and Manu Buys of Massachusetts General Hospital will discuss what a research team learned when it went to McMurdo Station in Antarctica to learn about the southernmost mammal on the planet and how their physiology is highly specialized.

The hearts and brains of seals are protected from injuries that would hurt land-based species, including humans.

The doctors will discuss what the seals can teach us about new possibilities of treating heart attacks and strokes as well as their own physiological limits in a changing habitat.

WHO: Dr. Allyson Hindle is a comparative physiologist who studies animals that live in extreme conditions.

She tries to identify the physiological limits of species within their environments - which can tell us how they may be able to respond (or not) to changing habitats - and provide insights for human medicine based on nature’s solutions to physiological challenges.

She is an Assistant Professor at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in the Department of Anesthesia.

Dr. Manu Buys is a translational molecular biologist and physiologist with extensive cross–disciplinary research expertise, and 18-plus years of experience generating and characterizing pre-clinical animal models of human disease including cardiovascular disease and glaucoma.

He is an Associate Professor at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in the Departments of Anesthesia and Ophthalmology.

HOW: Pre-registration is encouraged on the Aquarium’s website, http://www.neaq.org/learn/lectures/upcoming-lectures/ or call 617-973-5200 for more information.
