One of the least densely populated countries in the world, Namibia is located on the west coast of southern Africa, just north and west of South Africa.

The dry lands of Namibia were long inhabited by native peoples, but it became a German protectorate for a time starting in 1884 giving the cities a bit of a colonial feel.

Located between the Kalahari and Namib deserts, Namibia has the least rainfall of any country in sub-Saharan Africa.

There are five basic areas, the Central Plateau, the Namib, the Great Escarpment, the Bushveld, and the Kalahari Desert, leading to a wide variation in plant life and wildlife.

On the coast, Hector’s dolphins surf the waves, while fur seals rest on the shore.

Inland, despite the wild and arid conditions, one might see the spectacular speed of a cheetah, the beautiful horns of an oryx or massive tusks of an elephant.

With its remarkable natural environment, Namibia is also one of few countries in the world to specifically address conservation and protection of natural resources in its constitution.

Learn about the amazing culture and nature of this wild country and how they promote sustainable natural resource management by giving communities a stake in protecting their wildlife.
