little women week photoThe Town of Concord will be celebrating Little Women Week from December 15th to December 22nd.

This week will feature events themed around Louisa May Alcott and her famous work, Little Women. This week celebrates both the book as well as the release of the Little Women movie from Columbia Pictures and SONY directed by Greta Gerwig.

View an overview of all the Massachusetts filming locations that you'll see featured in the movie this winter.

See a collection of activities hosted by the Town of Concord, local museums and businesses and join in on the Little Women themed fun. Join the Town of Concord as we celebrate this special experience and explore not only the Town that inspired Little Women but was the filming location of many scenes in the upcoming film.



Everyday Events:

Orchard House, “The Home of Little Women” and so much more, will be open for guided tours on weekdays and offer its perennially popular Holiday Living History Program on the weekend .Visit this historic home (c. 1660) where Little Women was written and set in 1868.

Stop by the Concord Museum to see their newly renovated gallery, Concord: At the Center of Revolution, featuring 12 iconic artifacts including Louisa May Alcott’s copper tea kettle

Revolutionary Concord - Pick up some special Alcott items!

Concord Bookshop - Stop in to purchase Louisa May Alcott’s books!

Barrow Bookstore - Stop by to see a display of first edition Little Women illustrated by May Alcott (Louisa's youngest sister). Also at Barrow Bookstore, a number of other first and early editions of Louisa's works, magazine first appearances of her stories, plus Alcott literary related gifts.

Concord Free Public Library - Visit the Concord Free Public Library where guests will be able to view the largest collection of Louisa May Alcott works at their leisure including 2 chapters of the original manuscripts for Little Women as well as a number of Little Women related items.

1:00 pm Little Women Walking Tour Each Day
Celebrate Little Women Week by following in the footsteps of Louisa May Alcott with a licensed Concord tour guide. Learn about the real Alcotts on a walk through town to Author's Ridge in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Explore the town and the family that helped Louisa grow into a feminist, an abolitionist, and a bestselling author.

The tour will end at the Concord Free Public Library where guests will be able to view the largest collection of Louisa May Alcott works at their leisure including 2 chapters of the original manuscripts for Little Women.

90 minutes, 1.3 mile walk, mostly flat sidewalk or pavement, rain or shine, $15 adults, $12 for seniors & students. Tours depart from the Visitor Center, 58 Main St, Concord MA

Saturday December 14
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm Mother Daughter Book-Club Author Visit (grades 3 – 8)
Join us in the Children’s Room of the Concord Free Public Library (Main) for a special event with Heather Vogel Frederick, author of the Mother Daughter Book-Club series. The talk will focus on the first book in the series, which is based on Little Women. Program is free of charge. light refreshments will be served.

Sunday, December 15
3:30 pm Children’s Tea at the Concord Scout House, sponsored by Concord Recreation
Event includes photo booth, crafts, storytelling and more. -- including visits from May and Louisa May Alcott! $15 for under age 10, $20 for over age 10, with advanced reservation only. For more information. 978-287-1064 or email [email protected]

Tuesday, December 17
2:00 – 4:00 pm Alcott-Era Bookbinding (ages 8 -14)
Join us in the Children’s Room of the Concord Free Public Library (Main) for a bookbinding workshop! With the help of Book Conservator Luisa Granitto, we will catch a glimpse of how some books were made in the days of Louisa May Alcott. Then, we will bind some books of our own. Are you the next great Concord author? Come find out.

Tuesday December 17
1:00 – 3:00 pm Drop-In Mini Craft
Join Craft.ed for a mini craft project and create teacup bookmarks to take home. Participants will be provided with materials to create a take-home one of a kind bookmark inspired by the March Sisters! This program is free.

Thursday, December 19
11:30 am – 1:30 pm Luncheon Tea with Louisa May Alcott at Concord’s Colonial Inn
Enjoy the elegant atmosphere of Concord’s oldest hotel in the company of Louisa May Alcott (as portrayed by Jan Turnquist, Executive Director of Orchard House – The Home of Little Women)!

“Miss Alcott” will share stories from her unconventional upbringing, family friendships with Emerson, Thoreau, and the Hawthorne’s, the joys and challenges of being an author, her service as a Civil War nurse, and the family love that inspired her to write a true American classic.

Geared for ages six to 106, this lively interactive presentation is a heartwarming and joyous experience. Little Women Orchard House Blend Tea (green tea and apple) will be served. Books and merchandise from the Museum Store at Orchard House as well as gift certificates for guided tours of the House will be available for purchase.

Thursday, December 19th, 6:30-8pm
Scenes from Little Women: The Concord Players and Louisa May Alcott A lively entertainment with Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy Enjoy a short performance, meet some of the local actors who appear as extras in the film, and learn about Louisa's connection to the Concord Players. In keeping with the theme of Little Women and 19th Century Concord, we'll be serving gingerbread and mulled cider. Location-Concord Players, 51 Walden Street. http://www.concordplayers.org/

Saturday, December 21
10:00 am – 4:00 pm Guided Tours of The Wayside, Home of Authors
10:00 – 11:00 am “The Alcotts at Hillside” Special Tour
Join National Park Service staff for an Alcott family-themed tour of The Wayside, Home of Authors for an Alcott Family themed tour. It was at Hillside (renamed to the Wayside), in the first bedroom of her own, that Louisa began her writing career. Although the house is much enlarged today, you can still imagine the places where Louisa and her sisters lived many of the adventures she wrote about that became the beloved stories of childhood for which she was known.

Saturday December 21

Join the March family at Fruitlands Museum this holiday season for a candlelight holiday stroll inspired by Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women. Enjoy hot cocoa, carols, and live performances as you take a stroll back to a 19th century holiday celebration. 2 sessions each day at 4:30-6:00pm & 6:30-8pm

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the publishers are not interested. On the advice of her friend, Professor Bhaer, Jo weaves the story of herself, her sisters, and their experience growing up in Civil War America.

The original production starred the unparalleled Sutton Foster, who received Tony, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations for her performance.
