Conducted by Kevin Rhodes, the concert features Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, his Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, with violinist Yevgeny Kutik, and Tchaikovsky’s majestic Serenade for Strings in C Major.

Pro Arte’s second concert of the 2014-15 season will take place at First Baptist Church, Newton Centre on Saturday January 10, 2015 at 8pm.

Principal conductor Kevin Rhodes takes us on an exotic neoclassical journey of Russian simplicity and textual clarity.

The concert features Prokofiev’s Symphony No.

1 in D Major, considered to be one of the first neoclassical compositions, and nicknamed the “Classical” Symphony by the composer.

Prokofiev is further represented on this concert with his Violin Concerto No.

2 in G minor, performed by rising violin virtuoso Yevgeny Kutik, (www.yevgenykutik.com) who explores the piece’s energetic folk melodies in his first Pro Arte appearance.

Featured this past April on NPR’s “All Things Considered” with Robert Siegel, and the previous March in the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/19/arts/music/yevgeny-kutik-is-to-play-music-from-the-suitcase.html?ref=arts&_r=1), Mr. Kutik, tells the compelling story of his family’s emigration from Minsk to Western Mass in 1989, to avoid the increasing Soviet anti-Semitism of that era.

You may also listen to the NPR interview at http://www.npr.org/blogs/deceptivecadence/2014/04/04/297756300/a-time-capsule-from-a-soviet-era-childhood.

Also on this lush program can be heard Tchaikovsky’s majestic Serenade for Strings in C Major, thought to be one of the late Romantic era's definitive compositions.
