On Friday, April 10th, at 7 p.m., the Concord Conservatory of Music (CCM) continues its month-long celebration of jazz with a free faculty concert held at CCM, 1317 Main Street, Concord.

The concert dovetails with Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM!), a national commemoration of this truly original American genre.

Jazz, sometimes referred to as “America’s classical music,” traces its roots to the early part of the 20th century.

It’s about making something familiar into something fresh, and has had an incredible cultural impact.

The CCM faculty quartet appearing on April 10th affirms Jazz’s global reach.

Carlos Averhoff, Jr., tenor saxophonist, is from Cuba; bass player Ehud Ettun hails from Israel; Peruvian percussionist Jorge Perez-Albela adds to the group; and USA native Brian Friedland rounds out the quartet on piano.

The quartet’s musical impact is as global as its heritage—band members have headlined at jazz clubs and festivals including Banff, Canada; Panama City, Panama; Jerusalem, Israel; Barcelona, Spain; and throughout the United States.

Each musician brings their individual sensibility to the group.

Ettun believes music can serve as a bridge—“You can put barriers between people, but the cultures can still talk.” Averhoff takes his rich Cuban heritage and weaves that through contemporary Jazz compositions; Perez-Albela’s stylings include the cajón, a traditional Peruvian rhythm instrument; and Friedland’s new eclectic project, “Household Items,” draws liberally from the American experience.

The CCM faculty quartet will perform both original compositions and jazz standards, and it promises to be an exciting night of jazz by renowned musicians at the top of their craft.

The concert is free and open to the public.
