The Good News band makes its first appearance at The Middle Gray!

The band may be new to the music scene; however, the individual members are by no means unfamiliar to the community.

The band consists of 3 members-Benny Barken on the cajon, Brian Finnie on the guitar, and Naomi Wastewater on vocals, keys, and ukulele.

Ben took drum lessons for seven years, and in addition taught himself piano, bass, and guitar.

He has a wide variety of percussion instruments, including dried plants and other non-traditional percussions.

Brian studied guitar under Tom Deis, Andrew Jones, and Steve Yankee while attending Goucher College.

Besides playing guitar, he also enjoys songwriting.

Naomi studied at Goucher College as well.

She has been taking voice lessons for over 17 years, and been in lead singer in many bands, an a cappella group, and a jazz ensemble.

When she’s not busy playing music, she writes it too.

Before The Good News band formed, Naomi and Brian spent years performing together in Baltimore and Boston, including The Gopher Hole, Rosebud, and open mics in both cities.

Over the summer the band was formed, playing at open mics including The Lizard Lounge, Sally O’Brien’s, and in January you can see them at The Midway Café.

The band considers the music to be a compilation of Americana, folk and blues.

They draw their influences from artists including Grace Potter, Alabama Shakes, Bob Dylan, Jack White, Trampled by Turtles, Joni Mitchell, and too many more to name.

They may all be friends, but they are all pursuing music professionally.

They want to practice and collaborate with intention, while the music brings people together.
