Renowned Operatic Soloists Stephen Salters and Janna Baty Sing Leads, with Brittany Palmer, Noah Van Niel, Hanna Mathews and Orchestra
The Newton Community Chorus, now in its 37th season, performs Felix Mendelssohn’s grand oratorio Elijah, on January 27th, 8pm at First Baptist Church, 848 Beacon Street, Newton Centre.
Joining the chorus in lead roles are renowned soloists baritone Stephen Salters as Elijah and mezzo-soprano Janna Baty, as well as local favorites Brittany Palmer, Noah Van Niel and young soprano Hanna Mathews.
Music Director Richard Travers leads the orchestra and chorus.

Stephen Salters is a widely-hailed opera singer not only in Boston, but across the globe, for his passionate and impeccably articulated performances in leading roles in contemporary works and standard repertory.
He works regularly with major conductors, including Christoph Eschenbach, Seiji Ozawa, Robert Spano, Keith Lockhart, Leonard Slatkin and others.
The Washington Post described him, “Not only does he sound like God on a good day, but he’s intensely imaginative and adventurous, navigating repertoire that would make most singers creep into the wings and weep.”
Janna Baty has led a varied and versatile career, performing with the Boston Symphony, LA Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Boston Lyric Opera, among countless others, and performed at festivals worldwide.
A noted specialist in contemporary music, she has worked alongside many celebrated composers, including Boston’s own John Harbison and Yehudi Wyner—as well as having a long collaboration with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.
She is a Professor at the Yale School of Music where she directs the student opera.
Richard Travers has been Music Director of the Newton Community Chorus since 1998.
He earned his Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting from the Boston Conservatory as a student of Allen Lannom and degree in music education from Berklee College of Music.
He was a longtime educator in the Newton Public Schools, and served as Assistant Music Director of the Masterworks Chorale, Choral Director at Fitchburg State College, and Director of the New England Conservatory Youth Chorale.
The Newton Community Chorus has been a regional musical institution, growing from a small group for parents and teachers of students at the Underwood School in Newton Corner in 1981, performing show tunes and folk songs, to a large-scale chorus that presented major choral works with orchestra and professional soloists.
It’s dedicated volunteer members are dedicated to and ongoing commitment to professionalism and high-quality live performance.
The chorus welcomes singers to audition for its Spring season with auditions on February 5th and 12th.
