A program of romantic chamber music for strings taking us from the infatuation of the young Webern to the nostalgia of late Strauss, via the tragedy of young love from Zemlinsky, and the anguish that drives Mendelssohn’s final string quartet.
The all-star ensemble is led by the Terra Quartet, Silver medalist of the Melbourne Chamber Competition.

Terra String Quartet
Harriet Langley, violin | Amelia Dietrich, violin | Chih-Ta Chen, viola | Audrey Chen, cello Prizewinners at both the 2023 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and 2023 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, the Terra String Quartet is a vibrant young international ensemble based in New York City.
They are composed of graduates of The Juilliard School, The New England Conservatory, Harvard University and the Curtis Institute of Music.
Praised for their “remarkable maturity and musicality” (Hyde Park Herald, Chicago), has garnered additional wins including the Grand Prize and Gold Medal at the 2022 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the Christine and David Anderson Career Development Prize at the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition.
TSQ is a member of Le Dimore del Quartetto in Italy and is the first quartet to have been chosen to participate in the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival’s Professional Fellowship Program at East Carolina University.
Sydney Baedke, soprano
Named a “rising star to watch” by Opera Canada, soprano Sydney Baedke has been described as possessing a voice of “exquisite lyricism” (The Guardian).
Recent engagements include her Royal Opera House debut in The Rape of Lucretia, for which she was praised for her “unmistakably moving” portrayal of the Female Chorus (Opera Today), role debuts as both Mimì and Musetta in La bohème, and concert appearances with the Aldeburgh Festival and Carnegie Hall.
In 2023/24 she debuted with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (Bruckner’s Te Deum), Pacific Opera Victoria (Contessa Almaviva, Le Nozze di Figaro), and returns to Montreal’s Maison Symphonique as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Orchestre Philharmonique et Chœur des Mélomanes.
The first prize winner of Edmonton Opera’s 2023 Rumbold Vocal Prize Competition, she is a three-time prize winner at the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.
BARRY SHIFFMAN, viola
Artistic director of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival and classical music at Rockport Music, internationally acclaimed violinist and violist Barry Shiffman is well-respected as a musician, educator and administrator.
He was co-founder of the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ), and currently serves as both the Associate Dean and Director of Chamber Music at the Glenn Gould School and Dean of the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
During his 17 years with the SLSQ he appeared in over 2,000 concerts in venues around the globe and recorded several critically acclaimed discs under an exclusive contract with EMI Classics.
He has also served in numerous roles at the Banff Centre, including Director of Music Programs (2006-2010), Artistic Director of the Centre’s Summer Music Programs (2010-2016) and Executive Director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, which he continues to direct.
Colin Carr, cello
Colin Carr appears throughout the world as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and teacher.
He has played with major orchestras worldwide, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, The Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, the orchestras of Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, Philadelphia, Montréal and all the major orchestras of Australia and New Zealand.
As a member of the Golub-Kaplan-Carr Trio, he recorded and toured extensively for 20 years.
He is a frequent visitor to international chamber music festivals worldwide and has appeared often as a guest with the Guarneri and Emerson string quartets and with New York’s Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
