Nanocluster reflects the evolution of Newman and Spigel's relationship, their friendships, and their shared commitment to art and ideas.
Their journey began in 1985 when Newman produced Spigel’s band, sparking their creative collaboration.
Over time, they became a couple and launched their own projects, including the instrumental electronic duo Immersion in 1994.
Emerging from Immersion, Nanocluster began as a series of one-off gigs at the Rosehill in their new hometown of Brighton in 2017, featuring a roster of influential and cutting-edge musicians.
This creative endeavor culminated in the debut album, Nanocluster Vol. 1, released in 2021, which includes contributions from Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier, German post-rock electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss, and experimental artist Robin Rimbaud.
Nanocluster Vol. 2 further develops a stark beauty that resembles futuristic pop, featuring sleek lines and unexpected melodies.
Built around Thor Harris, the charismatic percussionist from Swans and various other projects, it also includes contributions from Cubzoa (Jack Wolter of Penelope Isles).
Central to the process is Newman and Spigel's radio show for Slack City Radio, Swimming In Sound, which features an entertainingly diverse playlist that has broadened their horizons.
It has also helped build relationships with certain collaborators and musicians like the ambient country masters, SUSS.
Together, they have produced Nanocluster Vol. 3, set to be released in mid-February 2025, followed by an extended Nanocluster tour in the US.
Nanocluster represents a 21st-century collision of shared ideas, creating a momentary extended musical family.
It’s about musical and personal relationships—a temporary band of house guests.
This is where immersion happens.
