Program notes by Richard M. Kesner

Satoshi Yagisawa (1975 - ), And Then the Ocean Glows Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa graduated from the Department of Composition at Musashino Academia Musicae, and later completed the Masters coursework at the graduate school of Musashino Academia Musicae.

His compositions for wind orchestra are popular in Japan and many other countries.

The work draws upon the following cultural themes and folk melodies: “Shining Morning Ocean,” “Wind Stormy Ocean,” and “Large Mother Ocean.” Before he began composing this piece, Yagisawa visited Niihama’s rehearsals and met the band’s inspired young students.

These experiences helped shape this exciting, fluid composition.

Amparo Edo Biol (1988 - ), Flor de Mayo Known for her mastery of orchestral writing and symphonic textures, Amparo Edo Biol is a leading contemporary musician and French horn player.

In her numerous collaborations as an orchestrater and arranger for albums, media projects, and symphonic productions, Edo Biol brings together melodies, rhythms, and harmonies from contemporary classical and contemporary popular styles.

Her recent research focuses on gamification techniques in early instrumental music practice.

She currently chairs the Contemporary Writing and Production Department at Berklee College of Music.

The musical composition for symphonic band Flor de Mayo was inspired by the story of a Valencian family of fishermen as told by writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez in his book of the same name.

It is a tale of the Valencian seashore.

The sea, off the Cabanal, is calm, as smooth as a polished mirror.

Not the slightest ripple broke the shimmering triangular wake that the sun sent shoreward over the lifeless surface of the water.

The turmoil comes not from the water or shore but the interactions of the people within a quaint seaside village.

Teo Aparicio Barberán (1967 - ), Symphony No.

2, “States of Mind”

Born in Enguera (Valencia), Teo Aparicio Barberán began his studies in his village band under the guidance of M.

Vidal, choosing the saxophone as his instrument.

In parallel to his saxophone studies, he studied double bass, piano, harmony, counterpoint, fugue, composition and orchestral conducting.

He is currently a professor of instrumentation and analysis in different specialized academies and is mainly dedicated to composition at CEU University.

Aparicio has composed more than a hundred works for different instrumental groups and has served as a distinguished conductor of wind ensembles throughout Spain and Portugal.

Today’s program concludes with Barberán’s Symphony No.

2, “States of Mind,” a symphony for band completed in 2008.

The work is composed in three movements.

The composer describes this work as a “philosophical argument” in three parts.

Logos (words, reason) is a free structure, expressing what one wishes to say using specialist terms.

With logos we create arguments to receive public approval and to defend our ideas.

Pathos, the second movement, refers to the effective use of public psychology.

The third movement, Ethos (credibility), refers to the character of the speaker and is perhaps the most important of the three arguments.

In the symphony, the first movement, logos, is based on a scherzo melody that undergoes various changes in rhythm and harmony.
