Not your usual December production! Come see an original absurdist play, in which one man struggles to find himself, questions the reality of realism, and doubts that matter matters and, of course, falls in love…

Arlington Children’s Theatre Jumps Into Absurdity

People have different perceptions of life and humanity.

Many believe the world we live in is a place of fascination and wonder, to others it is confusion; full of unanswerable questions, and to some life is mundane, dull and grey.

Theatre of the Absurd chooses to create a world based on the second perception: confusion and the unanswerable.

Absurdist plays focus on human beings trapped in illogical situations where anything can happen, and conventional storytelling, structure, and characterization are thrown out the window.

This December, Arlington Children’s Theatre presents an original piece of absurdist theatre written by Boston playwright Declan Keefe.

Being Borrowed follows a day in the life of executive Charles as he comes to the realization he is living on borrowed time.

Charles decides to try to find who has stolen his time, and during his quest he encounters many strange characters, falls in love with a talking rock, and comes to terms with the thought the life he chose may not have been his choice at all.

Being Borrowed is ACT’s first original, full-length production in several years, and has the theatre organization collaborating with local playwright and architect, Declan Keefe.

Before he opened his own architecture firm, Placetailor, designing and building eco-friendly, passive homes throughout the Boston area, Declan studied theatre and playwriting at Fitchburg State University.

He has written and produced several works of absurdist theatre such as, Ibsen’s The Wild Duck, and Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, as well as his own play, Shoe.

Through his playwriting, Declan, “Seeks to simply add a bit of playfulness and absurdity to an often too serious world.” He believes that absurdist theater can create an open and introspective cognitive space for audiences that allows them to see the absurdity, not just on stage, but within their everyday lives.

When asked about his inspiration for Being Borrowed, Declan reflected on a recent cross-country adventure.

“Being Borrowed was inspired by a three week ~270 mile, solo, self supported, traverse by foot across the Icelandic highlands that I made in the midst of writing this play.

The traverse led me to investigate the way we think about time, and how our language reflects the importance time has on our understanding and satisfaction with our own lives.”

Being Borrowed will be performed by 24 actors ages 13-18 from Arlington, and 6 surrounding towns and cities including Belmont, Waltham, Cambridge, Needham, and Winchester.

Actor Craig Diskin describes the rehearsal process as, “...quite a change from rehearsing for a musical, or a play that is a little more straightforward.

We have really focused on the language, and the not so traditional traits of the characters.”

Matt Lundeen, artistic director of Arlington Children’s Theatre, and director of Being Borrowed said, “Part of ACT’s mission is to not only entertain through theatre, but to educate.

By collaborating with a local playwright on an original piece, actors experience a different process: we have workshopped the script with the playwright, and they realize the script can always change, and the writing process can continue well into rehearsals.”
