The Ayer Shirley Regional High School (ASRHS) Drama Club is celebrating something big this Fall – a world premiere of a student-written musical. The 2016-17 season opener is a new works called “I Need a Vocation,” with words and music by ASRHS’ Ryan Messcher, with additional lyrics by Jake Miska, both Seniors at the high school.

The cast and crew of 20+ students will perform this musical comedy November 4 at 7pm; and November 5 at 2pm and 7pm in the ASRHS Auditorium, 141 Washington Street in Ayer.

In “I Need a Vocation,” best friends D and Iggy’s lives change forever when their life of crime catches up with them. The judge gives them two options: a two-year stay at Juvey or transferring schools to VSJJ (The Vocational School for Juvenile Justice).

Obviously, the two choose VSJJ where they meet several characters including a leather-jacket duo, a group of incompetent bullies, and some colorful staff members. Despite warnings, D strikes up a romance with the school's most popular girl, who turns out to be very unpopular.

The school's nerd goes rogue and turns the whole school upside down, left for D and Iggy to set straight. Audiences will be able to recognize many if not all of the characters in this musical comedy, and they’ll laugh when they see a bit of themselves in there, too!
