We live in a colorful world.

Ever wonder what gives a butterfly its blue spots or a lizard its red stripes?

In this lab, students will learn about natural and synthetic pigments, specifically focusing on the biological pathways used by E.

coli to create purple and green pigments.

Students will learn how to do simple bacterial transformation and explore how introducing or omitting different components of a genetic circuit can alter color.

Discussion will emphasize how control samples affect data analysis.

Students will also be encouraged to think creatively about experimental design and about how to modify existing genetic circuits for future use.
