The stars, aside from daily and annual motions, do not appear to change much on the scale of a human lifetime.
But in fact, they are born, live, and die on timescales far vaster than we can experience.
This month, look up and see stars at every stage including Betelgeuse, one of the most intriguing of the stars in the spring sky.
This is a star with a diameter over 750 times that of the Sun; if it were placed in the Sun's position in our Solar System, its surface would extend out past the orbit of Jupiter.
Yet, mighty Betelgeuse will have a much shorter lifetime than the Sun. And, towards the end of its life, things will get truly bizarre.
