juneteenth at isabella stewart gardner museum photoYou’re invited to celebrate Juneteenth at the Gardner Museum! This free day celebrates freedom, community, and learning in the City of Boston and beyond.

Bring family and friends to honor Juneteenth, the oldest nationally recognized commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, with a free day of performances, conversations, and activities throughout the Museum that celebrate community and freedom.

Join us as we celebrate and honor the legacies of black communities here in the City of Boston! In this very special program, we invite you to learn and reflect on the legacy of black residents, creatives, organizers, and cultural leaders on this very special day.

For far too long, there has been barely any light on the stories, perspectives, and struggles of Bostonians of color who continue to reside, build, and thrive here.

We welcome you to learn more about these stories through a very special screening of A Reckoning in Boston as well as other activities throughout the day.

Enjoy poetry with Amanda Shea to a dynamic conversation with executive producer Carl Chandler and local arts & culture leaders from the city.

Activities include a special screening of A Reckoning in Boston, quality time playing a range of games in the studio with family and friends, and thought-provoking conversations, poetry, and performances.

DJ KNSZWRTH | 11:30 AM – 1 PM and 1:30 – 4 PM

Poetry and Performance with Amanda Shea | 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Living Room

Come by the Living Room to reflect with Roxbury-based spoken word artist Amanda Shea as she invites us to look at our definitions of liberation and what it means to cultivate collective freedom in this city. Amanda will share prompts and a riveting performance of original poetry.

A Reckoning in Boston: Film Screenings
Doors open at 1:00 PM, film begins 1:30 PM
Conversation | 3:00 PM
Calderwood Hall

Join us for a very special screening of A Reckoning in Boston, a film that explores how for far too long, there has been an absence of space for documenting and amplifying the stories, perspectives, and struggles of Bostonians of Color who continue to reside, build, and thrive here.

Following the screening, stay to learn more about the film’s themes of transformation, trauma, freedom, place-making, and community, in a talkback with Producer Carl Chandler and guest panelists.

This conversation will be moderated by the Museum’s Manager of Community Engagement Mars Calderon and introduced with a poem by spoken word artist and community activist, Amanda Shea.
