ica playdate crafting a narrative photoTake your family to the ICA for a full day of free activities—from art making to circus and vaudeville—at the ICA's monthly Play Date, a recurring event on the last Saturday of each month inviting families to enjoy free art workshops, performances, and more.

The ICA’s September Play Date, Crafting a Narrative, kicks off with a mixed-media print workshop in the ICA’s Bank of America Art Lab, led by Jo Ham, illustrator and founder of HAM, whose work features the adventures of her popular character, Rabbit. Visitors to Play Date will be able to create their own original Rabbit artwork with HAM prints.

Art Lab Activities: What’s Your Uh Oh or Yippee moment? | 10 AM–3 PM (while supplies last)
Book Signing | 3 PM–4 PM
Stories Through Music with The Rubin Brothers | 11 AM–12 PM
Books + Looks | 12:30 PM + 1:30 PM
In the Galleries | 10 AM–5 PM

Following the workshop, the ICA will host HAM’s only book signing event in Boston for Jo Ham’s new children’s books Yipee! Rabbit and Uh Oh! Rabbit, published by Candlewick Press—an independent publisher based in Somerville, Massachusetts.

The ICA will be HAM’s only stop in Boston and the only opportunity to get her new releases signed. Yippee! Rabbit and Uh Oh! Rabbit will be available at the ICA Store alongside other special HAM products, including a limited-edition print and a bespoke candy bar made with COCO Chocolatier.

On the ICA’s Grandstand, Boston-based circus musicians and vaudeville entertainers, The Rubin Brothers, will lead an interactive musical storytelling performance featuring acrobatics, unicycling, juggling, and unbridled silliness.

Inside the galleries, visitors are invited to explore the museum as a Thinker, Maker, Explorer, or Performer with a gallery card game, and to join ICA staff-led readings of family-friendly storybooks, and their connections to artworks on view.
