Join the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and community partners for a historic celebration marking the 250th anniversary of Evacuation Day, commemorating the departure of British forces from Boston on March 17, 1776 — the first major victory of the American Revolutionary War.

This special Massachusetts 250 event honors the service and sacrifice of the soldiers and civilians whose efforts ended the 332-day Siege of Boston and changed the course of American history.

The morning begins at 10:30am with a ceremonial processional march through South Boston, reenacting the transport of cannon to Dorchester Heights — echoing General George Washington and General Henry Knox’s strategic fortification of the Heights in March 1776.

At 11:00am, a commemorative program will take place under a tent at the Dorchester Heights Monument and will include the rededication of the newly refurbished monument.

Event Highlights:

- Color Guard and musical entertainment
- Reenactor procession featuring more than 20 groups
- Monument rededication ceremony
- Remarks from state, federal, and city leaders
- Community time capsule presentation
- Musical performances and ceremonial wreath laying
- Bugle performance of Taps
- Celebratory cannon fire and music recessional

Scheduled speakers include representatives from the National Park Service, Governor Maura Healey, Congressman Stephen Lynch, Mayor Michelle Wu, the South Boston Citizens Association, and local historians and community leaders.

The procession and ceremony are free and open to the public.

The main ceremony will be held inside a tent at the monument, with additional adjacent tent space available for attendees.

On March 5, 1776, General George Washington positioned artillery transported from Fort Ticonderoga atop Dorchester Heights.

Faced with fortified American defenses, British General William Howe evacuated more than 11,000 soldiers and 1,200 Loyalists aboard 120 ships on March 17, 1776 — and British forces never again occupied Massachusetts.

Come be part of this once-in-a-generation historic commemoration in South Boston.
