An enchanted forest, a curse and a cast of fairy-tale characters in the beloved Stephen Sondhiem musical Into the Woods will delight audiences.

The North Shore Players production directed by Kimberley M.

Robertson features a multi-age, talented cast that captures the fun and gorgeous music of the twisted story based on Brothers Grimm fairy tales.

Robertson carefully weaves a blend of reality and fairytale moments in the woods to delight viewers and have the audience on the edge of their seats.

“The entire cast of the North Shore Players production of Into the Woods is truly talented,” said Director Kimberly Robertson of Andover.

“Musical Director Marcia Groome and I have worked together over the last 25 years, but never with such an amount of talent on stage together.

This amazing group has come together to create a glorious vocal sound for the complex Sondheim score.”
“Sondheim uses extremely intricate music harmonically and rhythmically that sets the tone for this story (Along with his use of irony in the lyrics).

I remember reading an interview one time that said his style lies ‘somewhere between Tin Pan Alley and classical.’ I think ultimately it's his communication with the audience - whether they’re laughing or crying - just eliciting feelings that make his works so entertaining,” added Groome a Salem, MA resident.

About this show:

The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them to explore the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests.

The main characters are taken from 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'Jack and the Beanstalk', 'Rapunzel', and 'Cinderella', as well as several others.

The story follows a Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to attend the King's Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give milk.

When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse.

Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

One of Sondheim's most popular works, INTO THE WOODS is a musically sophisticated show with the opportunity to feature actors adept at dark comedy.

Designers will especially enjoy highlighting the fantastical elements of this magical word.
