mr parent at lyric stage now streaming photoThe Lyric Stage Company of Boston presents the World Premiere production of Mr. Parent by Melinda Lopez with Maurice Emmanuel Parent and co-conceived and directed by Megan Sandberg-Zakian°. Performances begin Friday, January 7 and run through Sunday, February 6.

Note: After a critically acclaimed run, Mr. Parent will be available to stream from February 7 through February 20.

Maurice Emmanuel Parent returns to the Lyric Stage in this one-person show that is based on his time and adventures teaching in an urban public school system.

A struggling actor turns to teaching for a steady paycheck, thinking 'how hard could it be?' But
as he careens from the Boston Public Schools by day to serious thespian at night, Mr. Parent
starts to wonder where he really belongs.

Based on the stories and real-life adventures of Lyric Stage favorite, Maurice Emmanuel Parent, 'Mr. Parent' is a deeply felt and hilarious solo performance about crushingly inequitable systems, the brilliance of every kid, and how we might all find the space to be ourselves.

4-starYou'll Laugh Learn Think and Be Moved
This one-man show draws you in from the start. You'll feel like you know Maurice Parent and many of the students he discusses (brings to life) - even though none of them actually appear on stage. Not only is the topic eye-opening, and alarmingly close to home, his powerful message peels back the curtain of hypocrisy about disparate funding within school systems. It also invites you to begin to understand how difficult it must be to work in the teaching environment, and the sacrifices that must be made on a daily and personal level. It makes you aware, and it makes you think. The performance also demonstrates that Maurice Parent is an impressive actor with incredible range. He's doing what he was meant to do.
